A cover letter should add context
A strong cover letter explains the connection between your background, the role, and the employer. It should not repeat every resume bullet or rely on generic praise for the company.
When a cover letter is worth sending
- The application specifically asks for one.
- You are changing careers and need to explain transferable experience.
- You have a genuine connection to the company, product, or mission.
- A referral, employment gap, relocation, or unusual background needs brief context.
- You are applying to a smaller team where motivation and communication matter strongly.
A simple three-part structure
- Open with the role and one specific reason for your interest.
- Connect two or three verified experiences to the employer’s priorities.
- Close with the value you hope to contribute and a clear, professional next step.
What to avoid
- Changing only the company name in a generic letter.
- Making claims about skills or results that your resume cannot support.
- Writing a full-page autobiography.
- Using an overly casual tone without understanding the company culture.
Review it as a recruiter would
Read the letter once for relevance and once for accuracy. Every paragraph should help answer why this role, why this candidate, and why now. If a sentence could be sent unchanged to any company, make it more specific or remove it.
