How to Message a Recruiter on LinkedIn

Write concise, respectful LinkedIn outreach that gives recruiters enough context to respond without sending a generic or demanding message.

Give the recruiter a reason to read

Recruiters receive many messages, so begin with context rather than a long introduction. Mention the specific role, explain your relevant fit in one or two lines, and make a small, reasonable request.

Use a four-part message

  1. Greet the recruiter by name.
  2. Name the role, team, or job reference you are contacting them about.
  3. Share one concise and verifiable point of fit.
  4. Ask whether they would be open to reviewing your application or directing you to the right process.

Example structure

Hi [Name] — I am applying for the [Role] position at [Company]. In my recent [project or role], I [relevant, verified contribution]. I have applied through [channel] and would appreciate any guidance on whether my background fits what the team needs. Thank you for your time.

Avoid common outreach mistakes

  • Do not ask for a referral before giving any context.
  • Do not attach multiple files in the first message unless requested.
  • Do not send repeated follow-ups within a short period.
  • Do not claim a personal connection you do not have.
  • Do not turn a short message into a cover letter.

Follow up once, politely

If there is no reply, one brief follow-up after several business days is reasonable. Add useful context if you have it, remain respectful, and continue through the formal application process rather than relying on direct messages alone.
